Dental Bridge restoration for missing teeth by Endres Dental Care in Burtonsville, Maryland

What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. We call them bridges because they “bridge the gap” between the two teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Essentially the two teeth on each side of the space are used as supports for a porcelain tooth that fills in the empty space. Dental bridges are very similar to dental crowns because the two teeth on either side of the space (called abutments) are covered by porcelain and connected by a porcelain tooth in the middle (called a pontic) that replaces the missing tooth. We work closely with our ceramic artists who make your dental bridge to ensure it looks completely natural so no one should ever guess you are missing a tooth.

Should I get a dental bridge or a dental implant?

Both dental bridges and dental implants are great options for replacing missing teeth. In some cases a dental implant is not possible because there is not enough healthy bone and gums in the empty space to support a dental implant. If a dental implant is not possible then a dental bridge is an excellent option. When either option is possible, we often look at the health of the teeth next to the space to decide which is best. If the teeth on either side of the space have never had any dental work and are healthy, a dental implant is preferred because it will leave these perfect teeth untouched. If the teeth on either side have existing large restorations or especially if they are broken and need fixing, a dental bridge will likely be recommended because it can save time and money by fixing multiple teeth with one solution. Our dentists will talk you through your individual situation and be honest about which option will be the best for you in the long run.

Does a dental bridge hurt?

No, having a dental bridge made should not hurt. In fact, the experience of having a dental bridge made is very similar to having a simple filling done. There are a couple extra steps to the bridge process but, like always, we promise to make sure you are completely comfortable and don’t feel a thing. All of our doctors use the same painless anesthesia technique and if you suffer from severe dental anxiety we can also offer sedation to help with your fears.

What is a dental bridge made of?

Modern dental bridges are made from one of several materials depending on which tooth is being replaced. All of the modern dental materials are made to be highly esthetic and match your other natural teeth. Since a bridge is bridging a gap between two teeth, it needs to be very strong. For front teeth we prefer to use zirconia, an extremely strong white ceramic as the structure and then the ceramist layer porcelain or lithium disilicate (eMax) over top for superior esthetics. For back molar teeth we prefer to make the entire bridge with zirconia for the absolute best combination of strength and esthetics. None of the materials we use today contain metals.

What is the procedure for a dental bridge?

The dental bridge procedure is the same as that for a dental crown. The first step is always to make sure you are completely comfortable using our painless anesthesia technique. Once you are comfortable, we gently clean the teeth and remove any decay or cracks. Many times we will bond composite material (called a build-up) to add strength to the support teeth. Next we gently shape the teeth to best fit the dental bridge. An impression or an optical scan of the tooth will be taken to send to the lab where ceramists fabricate the final bridge. The last step is for us to cement on a temporary bridge that will give you the esthetics and chewing function for a couple weeks while the lab makes the final dental bridge. Once the lab is finished, we will see you for a short appointment to remove the temporary and permanently cement the final bridge
