Porcelain veneers are the quickest way to improve the esthetics of your smile. Veneers continue to become more and more popular as the most natural-looking cosmetic option. Make an appointment with us at Endres Dental Care in Burtonsville, MD to see if veneers are right for you.
What is a dental veneer?
The best way to visualize porcelain veneers is like contact lenses for your teeth. Dental veneers are extremely thin layers of porcelain that are bonded to the front of your tooth. Veneers are made of porcelain because it is the most-naturally looking material available and most closely mimics tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers can be used to alter the color, shape, and size of your teeth and smile.
How do porcelain veneers work?
Porcelain veneers require significant planning to get the best result. The first stage of the process is to have a consultation with your dentist so that he or she can get a comprehensive view of your goals for how you want your teeth and smile to look. Impressions, scans, and pictures of your teeth will be taken so that proper planning can be done for the new shapes and colors of your veneers.
After planning, we will have an appointment to prepare your teeth for the veneers. This is an easy process where we roughen the enamel surface of your teeth so that the veneers can form a strong and lasting bond to the tooth. Often times this appointment does not even require local anesthesia, but if your teeth are sensitive then we will simply use our painless anesthesia technique to make you comfortable. You will go home from this appointment with temporary veneers bonded to your teeth so you can give the new look a test drive while our lab fabricates the perfect final veneers in porcelain.
The final appointment is when we bond the final porcelain veneers permanently to your teeth. You will go home with a brand new smile and can start smiling, laughing, and eating with your new teeth immediately.
What types of veneers are available?
The main two types of veneers are porcelain veneers and composite veneers. The difference between the two is the material that the veneers are made of, either porcelain or composite resin. Porcelain veneers offer the highest esthetics because porcelain best matches natural enamel and they are fabricated in a lab by expert ceramists. Composite veneers are less expensive because they are have a shorter expected lifespan than porcelain and they are fabricated in the dentist’s office and applied directly to the tooth.
What do veneers cost?
Unfortunately, veneers are considered a cosmetic procedure and are usually not covered by insurance. Costs will always vary slightly amongst dentists but porcelain veneers generally average between $925-2,500 per tooth due to the high materials cost charged by expert ceramists to fabricate the porcelain in their labs.
