Orthodontics, Dental Braces & Invisalign
Straightening your teeth doesn’t have to be difficult. Whether you’re 13 or 63, everyone deserves a beautiful smile and you can trust that our expert orthodontic team in Burtonsville, MD will create a custom plan that is the quickest and easiest for you.
Orthodontists complete 2-3 years of extra training beyond a general dentist because moving teeth is incredibly complicated. We know you want it done right the first time, which is why we only trust our orthodontist to do your braces or Invisalign.
Both traditional braces and Invisalign provide excellent treatment options for straightening teeth. In most cases, the choice between braces and Invisalign is up to you, the patient, and we are here to answer all of your questions and give you the best treatment that fits your goals.
What is Invisalign (clear aligners)?
Invisalign, or clear aligners, is a practically invisible technology for moving and straightening teeth. The clear aligners are worn day and night, and are only removed for eating, brushing, and cleaning. Because they are clear and discreet, clear aligners offer an esthetic solution for adults with minimal disruption to your daily life. Depending on the complexity of the improvements we are making to your smile, typical treatment can be as short as a few weeks or as long as two years.
What is the Invisalign process?
At your first appointment a scan is taken of your teeth and the digital scan is used to make a sequence of custom clear aligners that move your teeth microns at a time. Each individual aligner is worn for about 10 days. The aligner will feel tight for the first few days as the teeth move, then it will loosen and at the 10 day mark you will switch to the next aligner. This ends up saving your time because it requires less frequent appointments than traditional braces.
Braces or Invisalign?
Our skilled orthodontist can usually use either braces or Invisalign to straighten your teeth, so in most cases the choice is yours. We will always make recommendations depending on your individual goals and will go through all of the proper planning to determine whether one option is better than the other.
In general, traditional braces are preferable for adolescents because they allow for more precise movements of the teeth and often allow teenagers to finish treatment quicker than with Invisalign. In select cases however, Invisalign can also work for teens so it is not out of the question.
Most adults prefer Invisalign because it is more discreet and they do not like the look of traditional braces. But again, unless there are very specific complexities to your treatment, both braces and Invisalign are great options and both will give the end result that you want.
Does my child need braces?
About 75% of children require orthodontic treatment. When orthodontic treatment is delayed until the late teens, bite imbalances and misalignment have already developed and fixing problems takes longer treatment times. For this reason, a simple (and no-charge) consultation with the orthodontist is recommended between the ages of 6-8 so that a long-term plan can be created. Oftentimes, early treatment during the first growth spurt can help the child avoid lengthy treatment as a teenager and ends up less expensive in the long run.
Braces solve a number of problems both visible and invisible. The most obvious advantage of braces (or Invisalign) is the esthetics of straighter teeth and closing spaces. The more complex problems that the orthodontist fixes are skeletal discrepancies between the upper and lower jaws. Think about trying to match an upper jaw inherited from your mother to a lower jaw inherited from your father. A skilled orthodontist gives your child a both a beautiful smile and manages the invisible complexities of craniofacial development.
Am I too old to get Invisalign or braces?
There is no such thing as too old for Invisalign or braces. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, then you are a good candidate for orthodontics and teeth can be straightened at any age. Our orthodontist has actually treated patients in their 90’s!
