Fillings and Sealants in Burtonsville, MD

Tooth decay and cavities are common dental issues. Receiving a tooth-colored filling to restore your tooth helps prevent the problem from developing into something worse.

What are tooth fillings and sealants?

A dental filling is a common, effective treatment for cavities and mild tooth decay. We offer both composite and amalgam fillings—both safe options. Composite fillings are often preferred for visible teeth since they match your natural tooth color.

Dental sealants are a thin coating applied to teeth, typically for children but also effective for adults. They protect back teeth from cavities by sealing deep grooves that are hard to clean. Sealants make these surfaces smoother and easier to brush, reducing the risk of decay. They’re a quick, affordable way to prevent cavities and the need for fillings.

  • How do cavity fillings work?

To treat cavities, decayed material must be removed and the hole filled. If left untreated, decay can spread and worsen. During the procedure, the dentist drills out the decay, then fills the space to restore the tooth’s structure. The filling is shaped to match the tooth, restoring strength and helping prevent future decay.

  • What types of filling materials are available?

Fillings can be made from gold, porcelain, silver amalgam (a mix of mercury, silver, tin, zinc and copper), tooth-colored plastic, composite resin or glass ionomer, which contains glass particles. The best material depends on the dentist’s recommendation, the decay’s location and severity, and your insurance coverage.

  • Should I have tooth sensitivity after a filling?

After a filling, your dentist will numb the area, so you may not feel anything for a couple of hours. Once the numbing wears off, it’s normal to experience sensitivity or pain in the tooth and surrounding gums—especially when eating hot or cold foods or brushing and flossing near the area.

    To reduce sensitivity:

    • Take an anti-inflammatory like Advil or Motrin
    • Avoid hot, cold or acidic foods and drinks
    • Brush and floss gently
    • Use desensitizing toothpaste like Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive
  • How long does a dental sealant last?

Dental sealants have been effectively used since the 1970s, mainly on chewing surfaces to prevent decay. They can last for years and be reapplied if worn. However, sealants only protect the treated surface, so fluoride and good oral hygiene are still needed to protect the entire tooth.

  • Who qualifies for dental sealants?

Sealants are for healthy teeth without cavities, usually applied to permanent molars around ages 6 and 12. Adults can get them, too, especially if previous sealants wore off or new cavities are forming. They’re an affordable way to prevent more costly dental treatments later.
